Sunday morning services
Our Sunday morning service is at 11am and lasts about an hour. It is traditional in style, but relaxed in atmosphere. Our choir generally sings during worship except in July and August when they get a well earned rest! (There is an example of a recent typical Sunday morning order of service here.) We welcome everyone to worship and are often joined by visitors. Children join with the rest of the congregation for the first part of the service and then Young Church goes elsewhere in the building for its more active, and usually noisier, programme. (Please see Young Church’s Sunday programme for the next few months here.) After the service we all meet for coffee or juice and chat.
Sunday evening services
From the mid-September until the end of May there is also a Sunday evening service at 6.30pm. The style of these services can be rather more varied. They take place in the New Session Room downstairs - enter by the lower door in Observatory Road. We enjoy a time of worship together in a less formal setting and we frequently welcome visitors.
Communion
We celebrate communion in different ways. Three times a year, on the first Sundays of February, June and October, we have Parish Communion in the standard formal Church of Scotland style. On the first Sunday of the other months we have the opportunity to share communion together in a less formal way. Sometimes this happens immediately after the 11am service, and some months it is at evening service. All who wish are warmly invited to share in any of these celebrations.
Weekday services
Wednesday Worship at 2.00pm on Wednesdays gives an opportunity mid-week for a short time of reflection and thanks-giving. The service lasts about half an hour and whilst being traditional in style is very informal in atmosphere. Wednesday worship also takes place downstairs in the Session Room.
An opportunity for worship of a completely different style takes place on Thursday lunchtimes. The church is open from 12.45 to 1.15pm for those who want to spend unstructured time in a place of prayer. Quiet reflective music is played and a very brief prayer from the Celtic Christian tradition is spoken at the beginning and end of the half hour. Drop in and slip out as you please.
Accessibility
Note: Our building is accessible to wheelchair users and we have fully accessible toilet facilities. The church has an induction loop to assist hearing aid users. Large print hymn books and orders of service are available. Please ask us if there are other things which we could do to make your visit easier or more comfortable.
