Stained Glass

Windows in the Apse
These constitute a series intended to illustrate the life and power and mission of Our Lord.

(the windows are numbered 1-7 from left to right)

1. A Subscription Window. (The window nearest the vestry door).

The subject is Jesus with the doctors in the Temple. The youthful Saviour is seen sitting in the pillared court of the Temple, with a sacred scroll upon His knee, while the Rabbis stand behind Him, and He is about to answer to His mother that He must be about His Father's business. Joseph, with his staff, stands silently in the background. Above and below the principal picture are the heads of Moses and Joshua, Samuel and David, while at the head of the window is a representation of the Lamb of God, with a banner, in accordance with ancient symbolism. The groundwork consists of fig leaves and fruit.
The glass and the design are by Messrs. Cottier & Co., London. It was erected in 1903.

2. Presented by Mrs. Berry and her family in memory of Sheriff Berry, a Trustee of the Church, and Chairman of the Management Committee, who died in January 1903.

The subject is Christ at Jacob's well, conversing with the woman of Samaria. In the background is the town of Sychar, and two passers-by are seen gazing with wonder at the strange colloquy. Above and below are the heads of four prophets-Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. The trefoils at the head contain the emblem of the Trinity, and cherub heads with flame-like wings. The border is dark blue with crimson and white flowers.
This, too, is the work of Messrs. Cottier & Co. and was erected in 1903.

3. Presented by Mrs. Donaldson and her family in memory of her husband, Mr. Robert Donaldson, a Manager of the Church, who died in November 1885.

The principal subject is Jesus blessing little children. The figures stand out on a rich background of silvery foliage, while beneath the central picture are two angels bearing a scroll, with the words: " In Heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father "-Matt. xviii, 10. In the circular opening at the top is an angel blowing a double trumpet.
The glass is the work of Messrs. Morris, of London, and the design is by Sir Edward Burne-Jones. It was erected in 1893.

4. Presented by Mr. Alexander Woodrow in memory of his father, Mr. Alexander Woodrow, who died in 1889.

The main subject is our Lord before Pilate, declaring that He is come to bear witness to the truth, and to set up a Kingdom not of this world. The groundwork consists of pomegranate leaves and fruit. The upper part of the window contains figures of the prophets who spoke of the Messiah-on the left, Jeremiah, and Daniel holding a scroll; . on the right, Ezekiel and Isaiah, each with an appropriate text. At the bottom we have Mr. Woodrow's coat-of-arms and the Glasgow City Arms (now hidden by the curtain).
This window was executed by Messrs. Shrigley & Hunt of Lancaster and was erected in 1893.

5. Presented by Mr. P. Sandeman Peat.

In the centre we have our Lord refusing to call down fire from heaven on an inhospitable Samaritan village, as requested by His disciples James and John, declaring that He is come not to destroy men's lives but to save them. The groundwork here is the foliage and fruit of the lemon tree. In the upper part we have the letters Alpha and Omega, with sunflowers, and at the summit a cross. Below are angels worshipping.
Designed and executed by Messrs. Cottier & Co., London, and erected in 1893.

6. Presented by Mr. J. C. Rogers in memory of his father, Mr. Josiah Rogers, who died in 1897.

The subject is Jesus at the grave of Lazarus, His hand covering His face, while Martha excitedly appeals to Him, and Mary sits absorbed in grief. A Jew points out the grave. Orange branches, with fruit and dark foliage, form the groundwork. The four Evangelists are also depicted, and at the head of the window are cherubs holding scrolls, on which are inscribed Faith, Hope and Charity.
This window is also by Messrs. Cottier & Co., and was erected in 1903.

7. A Subscription Window.

The subject is our Lord's miracle at the marriage in Cana of Galilee. The servants are seen in the foreground, filling the water-pots at the command of Jesus, and pouring out what is now good wine. In the background we catch a glimpse of the seated guests. There are, besides, four figures, two above and two below the central picture, each bearing a scroll with the titles of our Lord-Christ, Redeemer, Saviour, Lord. The whole rests on a groundwork of vine branches with grapes. The inscription consists of the words of the Gospel - John ii, 3-8. At the head of the window is a ship, representative of Christ's Gospel, the ship which carries the faithful over the sea of life.
This, too, is the work of Messrs. Cottier & Co., and was erected in 1903.

Memorial Window-opposite the vestry door.

This was presented by Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Teacher in memory of their son, Lieut. William George Teacher, in 1917.
It was designed and executed by Messrs. Meikle & Sons, and is emblematic of the triumph of Right and Justice over the powers of Evil.

Memorial Window-over the vestry door.

Presented by Miss A. N. Couper in memory of her sister, Miss Elizabeth Couper, who died in 1933. The window was dedicated in 1958, and its theme is Te Deum laudamus.
It was designed and made by Sadie F. McLellan (Mrs. Walter Pritchard) of Glasgow.

Rose Window

The rose window, which is original, is a spectacular feature of the west elevation. It draws your vision to centre of the wall, encompassed as it is by our magnificent Organ.

Baptistry Stained Glass

The small windows in the alcoves at the west end of the Church (in the Baptistry and on each side of the Porch) are in memory of Mr. John M. McLeod, a member of the Committee of Management of Hillhead who died in 1927. They were inserted by his brother and sisters in 1928. All are delightful scenes associated with children and baptism, with beatifully painted detail that can be appreciated at close quarters. The style indicates that they are from the studio of Stephen Adam during the period that it was run by Alf Webster's widow, Margaret.
